Chinchero also known as The Rainbow City is located 28 km. northwest of the city of Cusco. It is at an elevation of over 3160 meters and is flanked by the snow capped peaks of Salkantay, Veronica and Soray. The view from Chincheros is breathtaking. Chinchero is an original Inca town. The Spanish conquerors wanted to “civilize” and establish their culture in this beautiful place but never fully succeeded. Inhabitants live amongst almost untouched Inca constructions in the same place where their ancestors lived.
In the archaeological site of Chinchero gives visitors a better understanding of how vital this area was to agricultural production. Food storehouses and a highly efficient irrigation system show the genius of this culture.
Legend says, with the arrival of the Spanish, Chinchero was burned in 1536 by Manco Inca in his escape to Vilcabamba in order not to leave anything to the Spanish.
In the busy and colorful Sunday market in Chinchero visitors and locals can find household objects and fine textiles. In this knitting village, communities have preserved a living heritage of extraordinary value expressed in the handcrafted textiles, sustainable agricultural practices and a network of family and community relationships.
In the workshops you are able to see the entire process that leads to the finished handcrafted weavings. Artisans from chicnchero are happy to show you their ancient technique of how the wool of alpaca and sheep is prepared, washed, spun, dyed and woven into their works of art.
